Right-Sized Packaging: Reducing Waste and Preparing for PPWR

Right-sized packaging is becoming an increasingly important priority for corrugated packaging manufacturers, industrial companies, logistics providers and e-commerce businesses.
Companies today must handle a growing variety of product dimensions, shorter production runs and increasing demand for customized packaging. At the same time, packaging users are under pressure to reduce unnecessary material consumption, excessive empty space inside packages and the amount of finished-box inventory stored in their warehouses.
The European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, commonly known as the PPWR, will apply from 12 August 2026. The regulation introduces new packaging minimization requirements and establishes a future maximum empty-space ratio of 50% for grouped, transport and e-commerce packaging. The precise calculation methodology will be defined in a separate implementing act.
These developments are driving growing interest in flexible, right-sized and on-demand corrugated box production. By producing boxes according to the actual dimensions of each product or shipment, companies can reduce material consumption, limit unnecessary void space and respond more efficiently to changing production and logistics requirements.
